akp will complete the second phase of the renovation of Cairn Lodge Services

akp was engaged as the prime contractor to complete the second phase of the Cairn Lodge Services renovations.

Located just off the A74 (M) between J11 and J12, services are owned by Westmorland which serves Tebay on the M6, Rheged and Gloucester on the M5.

Westmorland offered the first family motorway services on UK roads and has no franchises or fast food outlets on its forecourt.

The history of their services began in 1972 when John and Barbara Dunning, farmers from the hills of Cumbria, established Tebay Services when the M6 passed through their farm. They opened a small cafe with 30 seats serving homemade and local dishes.

Gloucester Services on the M5 in 2015 was then named Best British Newcomer at the Observer Food Monthly Awards and opened by HRH The Prince of Wales.

Cairn Lodge Services must now follow suit with a complete renovation to include, but not be limited to; renewing windows and doors, redecorating throughout and a brand new main kitchen and living area.

During the works, the recently completed Farmshop, the new foyer and the changing rooms will remain open, with a hot food offering and the Farmshop fully operational.

Ian McEwan, Deputy Managing Director of akp, said: “With our origins also as a family business, akp started trading 28 years ago and today strives to offer its customers the same approach as then; providing personalized service, being proud of each project and offering something different – a more modern approach. So, working with the Westmorland family and its broader board of directors has proven to be a natural partnership, with their forward thinking approach and vision.

Stephen Rudd, Director of Structural and Civil Engineers, Will Rudd Davidson, said: “We were delighted to be involved in the development of the Cairn Lodge gas station refurbishment, working closely with Unum Architects, Allan & Hanel and akp to bring the project to fruition. It’s a great team collaboration and fun to be a part of it.

Graeme Davidson, director of Allan & Hanel, added, “We are delighted to continue our relationship with Westmorland and the design team, By-Jane, Unum Architects, Will Rudd Davidson and Kerr Associates, on the renovation and modernization of Cairn Lodge services. We have also worked successfully with AKP on other renovations and believe they will be a perfect fit for this project.

The works should start in mid-September and will end at the end of November.
